Furuncles
Furuncles, also known as boils, are deep skin infections that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. Most furuncles are caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus. Bacteria enters the body through tiny breaks in the skin (such as cuts or scrapes) or by traveling down a hair into the follicle, such as in the case of ingrown hairs. Plugged sweat glands, ingrown hairs and puncture wounds (for example, splinters) are all common starting points for infection.
A furuncle commonly appears on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, groin and buttocks. It starts as a tender, reddened 1-inch spot and, over time, turns into a firm, painful lump. Generally, after a week or less, the center of the furuncle softens and becomes filled with white pus. This pus contains a collection of bacteria, proteins and white blood cells that the body sends to fight the infection. Pus can be spontaneously drained from the skin’s surface or surgically opened. If draining a furuncle, it is important to minimize the spread of pus and carefully clean the entire area of leaked fluid. If bacteria-filled pus spreads to the surrounding area, a new furuncle, or carbuncle (a group of furuncles), may form.
Treating a furuncle or boil requires gentle but diligent cleaning throughout the healing process. Terrasil Wound Care guards against infection-causing bacteria while promoting healing. Terrasil also soothes redness and inflammation, which can help the furuncle to drain.
