Impetigo Rash

Impetigo is an extremely contagious bacterial infection of the skin, mainly affecting infants and children. It is caused by the streptococcus aureus or streptococcus pyogenes bacterias. There are 3 types of impetigo. Impetigo contagiosa, or nonbullous impetigo, causes round, crusted, oozing sores that swell and then rupture. When spots dry, they produce a honey-colored crusts, or scabs, on the skin. Symptoms most commonly appear on the face, particularly around the nose and mouth. They may also appear on arms and legs. Bullous impetigo produces small blisters, commonly on the trunk, arms and legs. Blisters tend to last longer than symptoms of other impetigo. Ecthyma is the final type of impetigo and considered the most serious. Painful sores may progress into ulcers on the legs or feet, leaving thick crusts after breaking open. Ecthyma may also causes scarring. This condition may be prevented by avoiding contact with anyone who has impetigo, and keeping the skin clean and dry.
