Scalp Ringworm
Tinea Capitis, also called scalp ringworm, is a common skin infection caused by a fungus. The infection is called “ringworm” because it can cause an itchy, red, circular rash. Ringworm is also called “tinea” or “dermatophytosis.” According to the CDC, approximately 40 different species of fungi can cause ringworm. The scientific names for the types of fungi that cause ringworm are Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton. Symptoms include itching, redness, inflammation, scaly skin patches, and in severe cases even hair loss and kerions (fungal abscesses). Tinea capitis is most common in children, as adults are usually more resistant to such infections. This condition is highly contagious, as transmission of the tinea fungus occurs easily through direct skin contact, household fabrics, and pets. During treatment, it is important to wash clothes and towels frequently and refrain from sharing brushes and combs.
